Grandmother’s Asleep originates from a childhood memory in which the noise from teenagers’ cars with their subwoofer sound systems in the new neighborhood used to shake the precious china cabinet that belonged to the artist’s grandmother.
The sound used in this project comes from bass subwoofers hidden in the cabinet, which shake the carefully displayed crystal glass and china. The china cabinet, from a time in the past, is supposed to stand still in a confined space without being exposed to unexpected and uncontrollable forces, but in this work it acquires a second nature. The previously self-contained culture indoors (the china cabinet) is confronted and fused with elements of the outdoor environment.
